So after lunch we were sitting around the table talking like we always do when Malena randomly asked us "do you guys want to go to a cemetery?" I said yes and Rachel thought I was crazy! It's a cultural experience and we all know I don't pass up one of those if I have the chance.
So Wilbert, Malena's chauffeur, took us. He's the nicest!! I don't know if I've talked about him before but I just love him! He's your go-to stereotypical looking Mexican guy. I wish I had a picture with him! (Note to self: take a picture with Wilbert.) He has pretty dark skin, gold trim around his front teeth and black slicked down hair. He is super funny..he always jokes around with me and Rachel but Rachel doesn't usually understand what he's saying to her because he speaks pretty fast so now he purposely speaks a little bit slower but it's still pretty fast.
He took us to the General Cemetery of Mérida which is the public one where anyone can buy a plot. But, man is it different!? But gorgeous!
This is Wilbert's Mother's grave. He said it had been awhile since he had come to visit her so it was good that he took us!
Ok so here comes the interesting part...After 4 years of the body being buried it is someone's job to unbury the body and collect all the bones and put them in a little box as shown below. That way there is more room for the rest of your family in the little house-looking sepulchres. As you can see some of the bones don't even have a box...
All in all, it was quite the learning experience! A wonderful cultural opportunity!
